Mount Nyiragongo, is located in the Virunga National park which is in the country of Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain approximately 20 km north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu, west of the Rwanda border.

The main crater of mount Nyiragongo is two kilometers wide and it contains a lava lake. There are two lava benches that are within the crater walls, and one is 3,200m which is lower than the one of 2,975m.

Mount Nyiragongo has been the most voluminous lava lake in history. The maximum elevation of the lava lake is recorded to be 3,260m this happened in 1977 eruption; the depth of the lake is 2,000ft.

Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira are the only two volcanic eruptions that are recorded in Africa with a 40% eruption.

Mount Nyiragongo crater had an active lava lake, however the crater walls fractured and the lava drained in less than an hour. The lava kept flowing down the flanks of the volcano at a speed of 60km/hr and within 30 minutes the lava was empty. It had flown to the south, north, and west of the volcano.

The Nyiragongo mountain is capable of causing a natural disaster and this caused the raise of awareness of the unique dangers of Nyiragongo.

The Mount Nyiragongo eruption of 1982-1994, was a major eruption  where by the elevation reached the outskirts of Goma, which is the provincial capital on the northern shores of lake Kivu. Because of the streaming  through Goma people were encouraged  to evacuate from Rwanda city  into Gisenyi.
