Rushaga sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park. Bwindi impenetrable national park is located in southwestern part of Uganda in Kanungu district on the edge of the Albertine rift valley. The national park is famously known for harboring half of the world’s mountain gorilla population, other primates like l’hoest monkeys, chimpanzees, animals like bush elephants and different bird species. Rushaga sector harbors the highest number of mountain gorillas which are available for trekking on a daily basis. Apart from gorilla trekking, Rushaga sector offers other interesting activities that visitors can engage in during the safari.

Gorilla habituation experience
Gorilla habituation experience is one of the activities to do in Rushaga sector after gorilla trekking. The habituation experience involves visitors moving into the tropical rainforest in search of the semi habituated mountain gorillas and once found, spend four hours with them in their natural habitat. Gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga sector starts very early in the morning with a briefing about the rules and regulations to follow during trekking where after you will join a team of researchers, scientists, park rangers, guides and start trekking in the forest. During trekking you will be able to view other primate species, view different bird species, plants among others and once the gorillas are found, you will be allowed to spend four hours with them in their natural environment which gives you an opportunity to learn and monitor their behaviors, participate in the naming process, watch them carry out their daily activities among others.
Nature walk is an interesting activity that gives visitors an opportunity to explore the park on foot with the company of an experienced park guide and an armed park ranger. During the guided nature walk, you will get up-close and personal with different animals, primates, view variety of bird species, plant and tree species, colorful butterflies, three horned chameleon, enjoy the cool breeze, listen to sweet sounds of bird species among others
Rushaga sector is a home of over 350 bird species including forest birds, migratory birds and Albertine rift endemics which makes it one of the best birding destination in Uganda. During bird watching which is commonly done early in the morning or in the evening, you will be accompanied by an experienced bird guide who will help you to spot different bird species like black bee-eater, African sooty flycatcher, African wood owl, finely banded woodpecker, grey cuckoo shrike, green tinker bird, bar tailed trogon, mountain yellow warbler, African green broadbill, kivu ground among others.
After gorilla trekking in Rushaga sector, you can engage in an exciting cultural tour where you will be able to interact with the Bakiga and Batwa/ pygmies who used to live in Bwindi forest before it was gazette into a national park. During the cultural tour, you will be able to learn about their culture, history, way of living, learn about the hunting and gathering skills of the Batwa people, visit the traditional healer who treat different diseases with traditional herbs, visit the craft shops, participate in their traditional performances among others.
Best time to visit Rushaga sector
Rushaga sector can be visited all year round though the best time is during the dry season also known as the peak season in the months of June, July, August, September, December, January and February. During the dry period there is less rainfall in the park therefore access roads to the sector and trekking trails will be dry and passable which makes gorilla habituation experience and nature walk easy.
Rushaga sector can also be visited in the wet/ rainy season during the months of March to May and November because this is the best time for birdwatching where you will be able to view colorful and migratory bird species.

How to get to Rushaga sector
Rushaga sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park and can be accessed by road transport means whereby you will drive from Kampala via Masaka, Mbarara and then to the park headquarters in Rushaga sector which takes about 9 to 10 hours’ drive.
Rushaga sector can also be accessed from Kigali Rwanda whereby you will fly to Kigali international airport and then connect to the park headquarters via Cyanika border in Kisoro district.
You can also access Rushaga sector by air transport means where by you will book scheduled or charter flights by Aero link or Bar aviation from Entebbe international airport to Kisoro airstrip and then connect to the park headquarters by road.
