Mountain Gorillas are endangered wild species & one of the largest apes in the family of primates. Mountain Gorillas share a human DNA of 98% after the chimpanzees and the baboons.
These endangered species live in the jungles of volcanoes national park, the park is located in the northwestern part of Rwanda it only takes 2 hours away from Kigali airport.
Volcanoes national park is located in the Virunga parts, which has 3 virunga volcanoes such as Karisimbi, Mikeno and Bisoke.
On the total 400 mountain Gorillas inhabiting the Virungas, there only 300 mountain Gorillas inhabiting the slopes of the forests gently parts of volcanic mountains in the volcanoes national park.
Volcanoes national park has a total of 10 habituated mountain Gorillas that are generally open to the tourists.
One of the family for gorilla habituation is the Susa family group which is trekked by only 8 tourists everyday and their expected to spend strictly one hour with the gorilla family.
The susa family lives at relatively higher altitude and its one of the most challenging mountain Gorilla group to trek.
The family was made famous and searched on by Dian Fossey an American Zoologist who had taken her time studying the mountain Gorillas in the country of Rwanda with her research center which was based at Karisoke.
The family had 42 members, but recently it was reduced to 28 family members including the 3 male gorillas and 3 Silverbacks.
The family was named after the susa river that flows in the area where this gorilla family lives. The susa family is very famous because of her twin mountain Gorillas ‘Impano’ and ‘Byishimo’, this family has some of the oldest habituated gorillas which are still living in the family.
This family can be trekked by physically fit and capable adventurous who have a heart of gorilla trekking, because it’s hard to get this family and one needs to hike for a long period of time.
The rangers and guides head first in the forest to trace where the family is in order to make trekking easy for the tourists.
Trekking this family is very exciting, tourists have a chance to enjoy an experience as they watch the twin babies’ play and jump around it’s a thrilling moment.
