Visiting the Pangolin Rescue Center in Buhoma

The pangolin rescue center is a sanctuary located in Buhoma sector in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is famously known for harboring the endangered mountain gorillas.

The pangolin rescue center was founded in 2015 by Moses Arineitwe and is dedicated to rescue, rehabilitate and eventually releasing the pangolins back to the wild. The center works closely with local communities to promote conservation and prevent poaching through awareness and by creating benefits for both the community and wildlife. The center has rescued over 150 pangolins and reformed over 70 poachers.

During your visit at the pangolin rescue center, you will be able to learn more about the pangolins, how they are rescued, their threats and how the center is protecting them with minimal human interference. It offers visitors a great experience to meet these endangered creatures up-close, learn how they are rescued and protected and also take pictures.

When to visit the rescue center

The pangolin rescue center can be visited anytime of the day either in the morning from 8:00am or in the afternoon until 6:00 pm. For visitors engaging in other activities like gorilla trekking or guided nature walk, it’s best visited in the afternoon.

How to get to there

The pangolin rescue center is located in Buhoma village in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The experience takes about 1 hour including a tour of the small fish pond project and piggery. It can easily be accessed by clients staying in accommodations near the Buhoma sector as it takes about 10 minutes’ drive to the center.

Buhoma sector can either be accessed by road transport where you will drive from Entebbe/Kampala which takes about 8-9 hours’ drive or from Kigali Rwanda which takes about 4-5 hours’ drive.

Buhoma sector can also be accessed by air transport where you will book a scheduled domestic flight with Aerolink from Entebbe International airport to Kihihi airstrip which takes about 1 hour.
