Oruzogo gorilla family, is located in Ruhija sector of Bwindi impenetrable forests in the southwest part of Uganda. Bwindi impenetrable national park, is one of the biggest parks in Africa inhabiting the mountain Gorillas.
The park inhabits 10 habituated gorilla families and one of the habituated gorilla family is the Oruzogo gorilla family.
Bwindi forest national park protects over 400 mountain Gorillas which is almost half of the gorillas in the world. It’s a separate park believed to have a different species of mountain Gorillas different from the Mountain Gorillas inhabiting the Virungas.
Mountain Gorillas are endangered species one of the largest in the group of primates sharing a human DNA of 98%.
The Oruzogo gorilla family is trekked on foot in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest. The family was first visited by tourists in 2011 and since then whoever visits the family falls in love with it.
The group is large with 22 members including 2 silverbacks one of them is ‘Tibirikwata’ the leader of the family, other leaders in the group include Kaganga (giant one), Bwoba (coward) and Busungu (short tempted).
The family has grown due to a number of births. The females in the group including Nta Murungi who gave birth in June 2011 and Musi gave birth in October 2011.
There was more joy in 2012 when Kakobe the female gave birth to twins. The family has energetic playful infants that keep visitors entertained and would want to stay for more.
The family is the second habituated family in Ruhija sector. Wake up early morning prepare and head to the park headquarters for a short briefing about going gorilla trekking to this family. It’s not an extreme trek but it requires endurance and physical fitness .
