It’s no surprise that when people are booking safaris in either country, they will ask for available dates for mountain gorilla trekking first so that they schedule their other activities in line with the mountain gorilla trekking.

And as chance and luck turn out, people will always get their opportunity to visit these gorillas and enjoy their company for one hour after a 4 – 6-hour trek. Here are the rules of mountain gorilla trekking:

Only persons above 15 years of age are accepted to trek.

You will not trek with a communicable disease; because humans share over 90% of their DNA with the gorillas it’s easy to spread diseases to the gorillas that’s why people who are sick are not allowed to trek the gorillas.

You should be physically fit or rather fit enough to take on a 4 – 6-hour trek of the gorillas.

You need to purchase a mountain gorilla trekking permit before you go on a trekking experience. Fact is without a mountain gorilla trekking permit you will not access any of the mountain gorilla trekking related things.

You cannot trek alone; you will have to be in a group of 8. So be welcoming and accommodating of the other 7 people in your trekking group.

There are a number of rules to follow while you trek so make sure you follow them. Fact is failure to adhere to some of these trekking rules may lead to you being dismissed from a trekking experience.

In the presence of the gorillas keep a 7-meter distance.

Don’t shout in the presence of the gorillas or even shout at the mountain gorillas.

It’s okay to take pictures and video of the gorillas m, but in all you do avoid flash photography or videography.

You are not allowed to touch the mountain gorillas

You are not allowed to feed the gorillas or share your food with the gorillas.

You are required to respect the mountain gorilla environment. Don’t litter or do any that will make the gorilla environment unlivable for the gorillas.

Don’t scare the gorillas

If you feel threatened by the gorillas don’t reiterate stay calm and don’t make any sudden noise or movement. Usually, your trekking guide or ranger is with you to help you through the situation.

To prevent tipping off the gorillas, you will need to avoid eye contact with the gorillas, shouting at them, touching them and teasing them in any way.

Don’t smoke, cough or sneeze in front of the gorillas.

You are also not supposed to drink in front of the gorillas. Of course, it’s not right to drink alcohol on a mountain gorilla trekking experience.

Don’t wonder into the forest on your trek. You will get lost and worst-case scenario fall into animal crowds that can harm you.

Above all listen and respect your guides direction and their instructions.

And most of all enjoy and enjoy your mountain gorilla trekking experience. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and one of the best safari experiences you will even have in the wild.
