Gorilla trekking in uganda : Uganda is one of the exceptional fascinating tourist destination in Uganda offering the amazing and exciting mountain gorilla trekking safari in the world, Uganda as a tourist destination is greatly gifted by supernatural powers to be among the few countries to habit the endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi impenetrable national park
Bwindi impenetrable national park a UNESCO natural world heritage located in south western Uganda on the edge of the rift valley in Kanungu district, Bwindi impenetrable national park the most biologically diverse rainforest in Uganda lieing in the altitude range of 1160 meters and 2607 meters above the sea level.
Bwindi impenetrable national park was gazetted and established as national park in 1991 covering an area of 321 square kilometers which are filled both montane and low land forests, these deep forests are is a source of rivers such as Ivi, munyaga, ihihizo, ishasha and Ntengyrere Rivers which flow into Lake Edward.
Bwindi impenetrable national park is known for offering the best mountain gorilla trekking experience in Africa, Bwindi impenetrable national park is a home to many mountain gorilla individuals. These mountain gorillas in Bwindi underwent through habituation process in which they were trained to be used and comfortable to human presence. Mountain gorilla families in Bwindi impenetrable national park where mountain gorilla trekking takes place are 19 in number, these family are located in four distinctive sectors that is Ruhija, buhoma, Rushaga and Nkuringo sector. Mubare gorilla family
Mubare gorilla family is one of the first and the oldest family to be habituated in Bwindi impenetrable nation park habituated in 1991, this family is trekked in buhoma sector and it consists of 9 members with one silver back. Mubare gorilla family is trekked near the park’s headquarters.
Rushegura gorilla family
Rushegura gorilla family is also found in buhoma sector, this family was formed in 2002and it consists of 19 members with 1 silverback. Rushegura gorilla family is under the leadership of Mwirimu a dominant silverback.
Habinyanja gorilla family
Habinyanja gorilla family is an amazing family found and trekked in buhoma, this family was habituated in 1997 and currently consists of 18 members with 2 silverbacks.
Katwe gorilla family
Katwe gorilla family is a newly habituated family located in buhoma sector, Katwe family consists of 7 family members with one dominant silverback.
Nkuringo gorilla family
Nkuringo gorilla family is a family of 19 members with 2 silverbacks found in Nkuringo sector, this family was previously led by a strong silverback Nkuringo who died in April 2008.
Bushaho gorilla family
Bushaho gorilla family is a family of 8 members with one dominant silverback Bahati, this family is found and trekked in the southern sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park in Nkuringo.
Bitukura gorilla family
Bitukura gorilla family is an amazing gorilla family is trekked and found in Ruhija sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park, it is made up of 14 family members with 14 silverbacks.
Mishaya gorilla family
Mishaya gorilla family is a family of 7 members with 1 dominant silverback who is the leader in the names of Mishaya, Mishaya gorilla family is trekked and found in Rushaga sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park.
Oruzogo gorilla family
Oruzogo gorilla family is found and trekked in Ruhija sector of the park, this gorilla family consists of 23 members with 1 silverback. Oruzogo gorilla family was open for trekking in 2011.
Nshongi gorilla gamily
Nshongi gorilla gamily is found in Rushaga sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park, this amazing family was open for trekking in 2009 and it consists of 18 members.
Kahungye gorilla family
Kahungye gorilla gamily is a family of 13 members with 3 silverbacks, kahungye gorilla family is found and trekked in Rushaga sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park. This family was open for trekking in 2011 and it is under the leadership of a dominant silverback Rumansi.
Bweza gorilla family
Bweza gorilla family is a family of 9 individuals with 1 dominant silverback Bweza who is the leader of the group, Bweza as a dormant silverback split from Nshongi gorilla family thus creating his own family which was named after him. Bweza gorilla family is found in Rushaga sector.
Busingye gorilla family
Busingye gorilla family is a family of 9 members with 1 silverback who is the leader, this family broke away from kahungye family and it is found and trekked in Rushaga sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park.
Kyaguriro gorilla family
Kyaguriro gorilla family is relatively a big family of 15 individuals and an early family to be habituated and open for trekking in 1999, this family is the most treasured gorilla family in the park as it is reserved for research and study purposes by Max Plank institute. Kyaguriro gorilla family has gone through hand of leaders since the death of its strong leader Rukina who succeeded Zeus who died in 2015. Currently the group is under the leadership of a dominant silverback Rukara.
Bikyingi gorilla family
Bikyingi gorilla family is a family of 21 individuals with 1 silverback in the name of bikyingi from whom the group gets its name, bikyingi is a friendly leaders which makes this family entertaining to visit. Bikyingi gorilla family is found and trekked in Rushaga area.
Christmas gorilla family
Christmas gorilla family is a newest family to be opened for trekking in Bwindi impenetrable national park together with Katwe gorilla family, this family consists of 9 members including 1 dominant silverback Christmas as the family’s leader. This family is found and trekked in Nkuringo sector.
Mukiza gorilla family
Mukiza gorilla family is a family of 10 members with 1 silverback who is the family’s leader, Mukiza gorilla family is found and trekked in Ruhija sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park. This family. This family split from Kyaguliro gorilla family.
Kutu gorilla family
Kutu gorilla family is a family of 8 members with 1 silverback as their leader, Kutu gorilla family is found and trekked in Rushaga sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park.
Mucunguzi gorilla family
Mucunguzi gorilla family is a group of 8 individuals dominantly female gorillas, proceeding constant fights in Bweza gorilla family Mucunguzi a growing silverback split from the group (Bweza) to start his own family which was the family gets its name from.
Bwindi impenetrable national park’s gorilla population keeps on increasing due to births of new gorilla babies though the above mentioned are the only families open for trekking.
Mgahinga gorilla national park
Mgahinga gorilla national park is the second destination in Uganda where mountain gorilla trekking expedition takes place.
Mgahinga gorilla national park is situated in south western region of Uganda in Kisoro district, mgahinga national park is relatively a small national park covering an area of 33.7 square kilometers. Mgahinga gorilla national park is part of the great Virunga conservation area, Virunga conservation area consists of mgahinga national park itself, Virunga national park of democratic republic of Congo and volcanoes national park of Rwanda.
Mgahinga gorilla national park is a home to only one gorilla family where mountain gorilla trekking takes place and that is family is called Nyakagezi gorilla family.
Nyakagezi gorilla family
Nyakagezi gorilla family is a mobile gorilla group which occasionally crosses over to Rwanda forests o volcanoes national park, this group is a family of 9 members including 2 silverbacks, 3 adult females, 2 juveniles and 2 infants.
Note: Uganda’s homes of mountain gorilla that Bwindi impenetrable national park and mgahinga gorilla national park are open to all tourists for mountain gorilla trekking throughout the year but to take part in the exciting mountain gorilla trekking expedition you need to be in possession of a mountain gorilla trekking permit
Mountain gorilla trekking permit is purchased at offices of Uganda wildlife authority, the permit costs US $700 and you can either purchase it yourself directly or through your tour agent. When purchasing the permit it is better to book for your months before the actual of your travelling because the high demand for them.
