Apart from Ruhija sector, gorilla trekking is also done in Rushaga sector in the south, Buhoma sector in the north and Nkuringo sector in the south.
Ruhija sector is a home of 4 habituated gorilla families namely Bitukura, Oruzogo, Mukiza and Kyaguriro gorilla families which are available for trekking daily. Trekking of mountain gorillas in Ruhija sector starts very early in the morning with a briefing about the rules and regulations to follow during trekking. After the briefing, you will be able subdivided into groups of 8 people where each group will be allocated a habituated gorilla family to trek and an experienced park guide. Gorilla trekking in Ruhija sector takes about 2 hours to 6 hours depending on where the mountain gorillas are located because they like to move from one place to another in search of food. During trekking, you will be able to view other primates, different bird species, insects, tree species among others. Once the gorillas are found, you will be allowed to spend one hour with them in their habitat which gives you an opportunity to watch them carry out their daily activities, learn more about their habits, take photos and record incredible videos.

During the dry season, there is less rainfall in the park therefore access roads and gorilla trekking trails will be dry and passable which makes gorilla trekking easy compared to the rainy season when the gorilla trekking trails are muddy and slippery which makes trekking difficult.
What to pack

Ruhija sector can also be accessed by air transport means where you will book scheduled or charter flights from Entebbe international airport or Kajjansi airfield to Kihihi airstrip and then connect to Ruhija park headquarters which takes about 1 to 2 hours’ drive.
Travelers can as well access Ruhija sector from Kigali Rwanda where they will fly to Kigali international airport and then connect to Ruhija park headquarters through Katuna border which takes about 4 to 5 hours’ drive.
