Chimpanzee habituation in Uganda 2024 – 2025 : Gorilla habituation is a process where the wild chimpanzees are trained to get used to human presence for trekking. Chimpanzee habituation experience is only done in Kibale forest national park which is also known as the primate capital because it’s a home of 13 primate species including chimpanzee, black and white colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys, grey cheeked mangabey, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, l’hoest monkeys among others. Kibale forest national park also harbours different animals like forest elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, bushbucks, giant forest hogs and over 370 recorded bird species including African pitta, great blue turaco, papyrus gonolek, little greenbul, dusky crimsonwing among others.

Chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale forest national park starts very early in the morning with a briefing about the rules, regulations and expectations at Kanyachu park headquarters. After the briefing, you will start trekking in the forest with a team of researchers, scientists, park rangers, park guide among others in search of the chimpanzees which takes a whole day. During trekking you will be able to view other primate species, mammals, bird species, plant and tree species among others and once the chimpanzees are located, you will be allowed to spend four hours with them in their natural habitat which gives you an opportunity to learn and monitor their behaviours, watch them carry out their daily activities like feeding, playing, breastfeeding, grooming young ones, hunting, resting, making new nests, take photos among others.

Chimpanzee habituation permits in Kibale forest national park cost 250 USD per person for foreign non residents, 200 USD per person for foreign residents and 200,000 UGX per person for East African citizens. The chimpanzee habituation permit was however increased to 300 USD per person for foreign non residents, 250 USD per person for foreign residents and 250,000 UGX per person for East African citizens effective 1st/July/2024.

Best time to go for chimpanzee habituation safari in Uganda
Chimpanzee habituation safari in kibale forest national park can be done anytime throughout the year though the best period is during the dry season in the months of June to September and December to February because during this time there is less rainfall in the park therefore the trekking trails will be dry and passable which makes chimpanzee habituation easy compared to the rainy season when the trekking trails are muddy and slippery which make chimpanzee habituation difficult.

How to get to Kibale forest national park
Kibale forest national park is located in western part of Uganda and can be accessed by road transport means where you will drive from Kampala via Mubende, Fort Portal and then to the park headquarters which takes about 5 to 6 hours’ drive.
Kibale forest national park can also be accessed by air transport means where you will book scheduled or charter domestic flights from Entebbe international airport to Kasese airstrip and then connect to the park headquarters by road.
You can as well access Kibale forest national park from Bwindi impenetrable national park which takes about 5 to 6 hours’ drive.
